Support & FAQ
Advance Guide is a free, on-device app — there is no account, no subscription, and no remote server. The questions below are the ones we get most often. If your question isn't listed, write to us through the contact form or email [email protected] directly.
Frequently asked questions
Does the app collect any data about me?
No. The App has zero analytics SDKs, zero advertising SDKs, and makes zero network requests. Your calculator inputs, walk progress, and feedback drafts are stored only on your iPhone. The App's App Store privacy label is Data Not Collected. See the full Privacy Policy.
Why are the formulas hard-coded? Can I edit the math?
The formulas are textbook standards — APR/APY, compound interest, fixed-payment payoff, and credit utilization. We show them verbatim so you can verify them against any reference you trust. You change the inputs (principal, fee, days, rate, balance, payment, used, limit); the formula is the constant. If you'd like to see additional formulas in a future release (e.g. mortgage amortization, NPV, IRR), tell us via the contact form below.
The "Try in Math Bench" button doesn't seem to do anything on iPad.
Advance Guide is an iPhone-only app. On iPad it runs in iPhone-compatibility mode (the iPhone window appears centered on the iPad screen). The button works as on iPhone — it switches the active tab to Math Bench and pre-loads a default scenario for the matching mode.
I tapped "Mark understood" but it isn't synced to my other phone.
Correct — there is no sync. Each device keeps its own copy of marks, walk progress, and saved feedback. We deliberately do not run a server, because that would require an account flow and start collecting data we don't need. If you replace your phone, iOS's standard backup of the App's container will carry the marks across.
I want to wipe everything I've done in the app.
Tap Settings → Built-in data controls → Clear local state. The confirmation dialog wipes every per-screen preference, every walk answer, every applied article action, every saved feedback row, and every "marked understood" record. After confirmation, the App reopens in its first-launch state.
Will Advance Guide become a subscription?
No. The App ships as free with no in-app purchase and no subscription, and we have no plans to change that. If we ever build a paid feature (e.g. a deeper calculator pack), it will be a separate purchase and will not put any existing feature behind a paywall.
Can I share Field Notes articles with friends?
Not from inside the App today — we did not build a share sheet for that, because share-flows often pull in third-party SDKs we don't want to ship. If you'd like to discuss an article, take a screenshot. If we add a share button later, it will use the standard iOS share sheet only (no analytics).
Is the educational disclaimer mandatory? Why is it visible?
Yes — and it's visible because the math you see in the App can intersect with regulated topics (loan APR, credit score, taxes). The disclaimer makes the App's role explicit: an editorial reference, not a financial-services product. It is in Settings → Educational disclaimer and in the first onboarding slide footer. It does not collect anything; it's a static piece of copy.
Can the calculators be wrong?
The textbook formulas are correct. Real-world products often add fees, taxes, regulatory rounding, and special conditions that the App does not model — for example, a credit card might compound interest with a different day-count convention than the standard 365-day formula. If you want to know what your actual contract will charge, read the contract. The App is for understanding the shape of the math, not the legal numbers.
How do I reset onboarding?
Onboarding is shown once, on first launch. To see it again, tap Settings → Built-in data controls → Clear local state. The next launch will replay the walkthrough.
